Important Notice
Your Indian passport establishes your identity in a foreign country. Hence, it is important to have it re-issued before the date of expiry. The passport can be submitted for re-issue up to one year before the date of expiry.
Your Indian passport is a valuable document. It should always be either in your own custody or in the custody of a person duly authorized by you. If lost or destroyed, the fact and circumstances should be immediately reported to the nearest Indian Embassy / Consulate and to the local police.
We suggest that you keep a photocopy of your Indian passport in a safe place, separate from the passport. The photocopy should include the pages showing the personal particulars, validity of the passport, date/place of issue, also the stamp of departure from India, entry in Japan and the visa issued by the Japanese authorities.
All minors are required to have a separate passport . Old practice of including child’s name in the passport of either of the parents has been discontinued.
On acquiring Japanese nationality, the Indian passport should be submitted to the nearest Embassy of India/Consulate General of India for cancellation. It is returned to the holder after cancellation. Use of Indian passport for travel to India after acquiring foreign nationality is an offence and invites penalty. After acquiring Japanese citizenship, you do not remain an Indian citizen and need an Indian visa to travel to India.
Indian citizens residing in India and abroad and holding handwritten passports as well as 20-year passports with validity beyond the 24th November 2015, should, therefore, apply for re-issue of passports and obtain Machine Readable Passport (MRP) well before the deadline in order to avoid any inconvenience in obtaining foreign visa or immigration problem.
Holders of Indian Jumbo Passports: All holders of Indian Jumbo passports bearing numbers Z-014311 to Z-014511 issued by the Embassy of India, Tokyo during the period 31 Aug 2006 to 13 Sept 2007 are hereby informed that passports bearing these numbers are being recalled. All concerned are requested to contact the Consular Wing of this Mission immediately with their passports to obtain fresh passports which will be issued free of charge.

Issue of MRPs is processed centrally in New Delhi, a time line of 4 to 6 weeks between submission of application and delivery of the new passport is required.
